Description : Old abandoned mental institute, said to be haunted by former patients that were tortured there. If you go inside you can still hear them kicking and screaming.

UnderCliff and Pachaug State Forest - Hells Hallow – Maude’s Grave

Name : Undercliff

Location : 72 Undercliff Road, Meriden CT.

Description : Back in the early 1900's till the 30's and 40's near the Undercliff Institution there was a sanatorium made for sick children with diseases like rubella, mumps, German measles etc. Most of the children were brought there to die. The old brick building still stands near the old institution. Residents say that they can hear children crying and laughing. They are seen in the windows but only to vanish before you. Undercliff is now an abandoned building that is host to many different sightings. Reports of hearing former patients running around corners and down hallways to escape orderlies, and faint screams being heard from rooms where shock therapy was supposedly administered. Also sightings of a former patient who was murdered by a group of other patients with plastic utensils from the commissary walks the old courtyard.

Warning : Do not drive up Undercliff Road to reach Undercliff, there is still a building in use and unauthorized cars are not allowed to enter. Instead park in the Target Parking lot and climb the hill to the fence. Go through the opening in the fence (or scale the fence) and look for the trail on the other side. Follow it and it will lead you directly to Undercliff. There are multiple buildings, all but two are vacant. Be very careful not to be spotted, cops sometimes drive through the area.

Name : Maude's Grave

Location : Hell Hollow Rd, Voluntown CT. Find the pond and park to the right side facing it. Follow the small trail until you find a pile of rocks, which marks her grave.

Description : There are many stories as to who Maude was, they are as follows:

The first story is that Maude was the daughter of a witch. She was accidentally shot and killed by a hunter and her mother (the witch) placed a curse on her grave. It's said that if you take a stone from her grave bad things will happen to you. Supposedly a couple boys took a rock from her grave, and on their drive home they were all killed in a car accident. Another variation to the witch story is that Maude was hung for being a witch and now haunts the area surrounding her grave.

The next story is that Maude is a girl from the 19th century who has a grave marker in the woods. The story is that if you drive by her grave and say her name she'll appear in front of your car and cause it to stall.

The last story is that Maude was a little Native American girl who was lost in the woods. The story goes, her family were Pequots slaughtered by John Winthrop Jr.'s men. Little Maude (don't know why she has a white persons name) wandered into the woods crying after her people were attacked. The soldiers heard her, found her, and murdered her. Hunters and hikers in the area swear to this day that you can hear her screams in the woods.

Regardless of who Maude really is there have been many strange happenings to those that go there, especially at night.

Pachaug State Forest - Hells Hallow – Maude’s Grave -September 2005 Update/correction: Formerly listed as 3 separate listings, Maude's Grave can be approached far more easily from the Sterling end of Hell Hallow Road, and is actually on that side, not Voluntown. The grave is a pile of rocks about ten feet from the road (on the right side if you are coming from Sterling) that can be found from a cleared path. It can easily be visited without being bothered. Sightings of a 17 foot tall black flash have been seen, about 2 feet above ground, crossing the road in front of car headlights, and then chasing the car, in addition to everything already said. - An Indian girl was killed by English soldiers in the section of the forest. Ever since, cries attributed to her have been heard there. The ghost of a little girl named Maude has been appearing for 100 years on Hell Hollow Road near her gravesite. It is located along Hells Hallow Road. When riding in a car and her name is uttered by her gravesite, the car is supposed to either stall or crash. Observers have also seen orbs.
